Widely considered the original Caribbean Carnival that inspired Notting Hill, Toronto, and Brooklyn's versions, Trinidad's is a two-day explosion of soca music, elaborate feathered mas costumes, and J'ouvert - a pre-dawn street party covered in paint, mud, and powder that kicks the whole thing off. It's as much a national identity as a festival.
